WHITE and silver are the new "black" when it comes to consumers' choice of car colours.
They overtook black and grey to emerge tops in the recently released 2011 DuPont Automotive Colour Popularity Report.
White tied with silver at 22 per cent as the fastest-growing car colour of choice among consumers globally, with black close behind at No. 3 (20 per cent), according to the 59th edition of the annual study, which takes into account 11 leading automotive regions in the world.
In North America, white continues to dominate for the fifth consecutive year, with 23 per cent of market share. It is the favourite colour in the sport-utility-vehicle segment. White is also preferred in Japan (26 per cent) and India (28 per cent).
However, motorists in China and South Korea prefer silver, which took 26 per cent and 30 per cent of market share, respectively. Silver has been the top choice in these two countries for two consecutive years.
The DuPont report noted that while black and silver are considered the most-sought-after colours in the luxury-car segment, white has seen growth in this market as more consumers are going for "casual luxury".
The growing acceptance of white and pearlescent white continues to inspire luxury design.
In the Asia-Pacific's small-car segment, the DuPont survey reported decreased interest in black and a growing preference for blue among consumers.
So, blue, said DuPont, could possibly be the next "it" colour, considering its growth in popularity in all markets.
Ms Kumiko Ohmura, DuPont's colour marketing manager for the Asia-Pacific, said: "In the Asia-Pacific region, we are seeing colour trends shifting to (shades that call to mind) nature and the environment."
