The Straits Times, 25 November 2011:Singapore National Academy of Science welcomes first batch

They did not receive trophies or prize money last night – only a little suffix to add to their names.

But in obtaining that honour, 11 professors have been recognized as top names in the fields of mathematics and science here.

Last night, they became the first to be anointed fellows of the Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS), an umbrella organization that represents the scientific community here.

The list of 11 includes prominent names who have made many contributions to the study of mathematics and science in Singapore.

Dr Kwek Leong Chuan, principal investigator of the Centre for Quantum Technologies and one of the panellists, said that the fellows were picked partly for the contributions they had made to the local scientific community by promoting education and outreach programmes.

Another recipient of the fellowship, NUS physics professor Andrew Wee, said he hopes the fellowship will change the way that research funding is apportioned here.

In other countries, funding is awarded to certain brand-name researchers, who then have the freedom to pursue ideas, even if most do not work.

Han will take on the position of managing editor, SPH's English and Malay Newspapers Division, reporting directly to editor-in-chief Patrick Daniel to oversee all SPH's print and digital products, as well as Straits Times Press, SPH's book publishing subsidiary.

Han has been editor of The Straits Times for nine years.

Fernandez said: "I believe we are at a critical moment for the media. Singaporeans today are increasingly well-educated, well-read, and well-travelled. They have many options to choose from for their news and views, and more ways of getting these, when and wherever they want them."

What does Singapore have apart from The Straits Times? The New Paper, Business Times and My Paper are all owned by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), which also has a stake in Today. So there is no real competition. The New Paper is a tabloid, Business Times a business daily, both My Paper and Today are freesheets. The Straits Times is the only newspaper of record.

That’s rich. What onslaught of online social media? Yes, half the people in Singapore seem to have Facebook accounts. Singapore has 2.6 million Facebook users, according to Socialbakers. That’s more than half the population of 5.18 million.

Warren Fernandez, who will take over as editor of The Straits Times from Han Fook Kwang in February, inherits a serious newspaper with a large readership. But one reason it remains essential reading in Singapore is there no real alternative.
