Safari Zoo Run 2011

Safari Zoo Run:The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, formerly known as the San Diego Wild Animal Park, is an 1,800 acre enclosure-free park where animals roam around and park-goers can watch with wonder. The new and improved Safari Park grants guests the opportunity to explore the grounds with various kinds of safari experiences—whether by tram, zip line, or hot air balloon!
The park is located about 35 minutes north of downtown San Diego in the San Pasquale Valley.  This inland location means the daytime high temperatures are frequently 10-15 degrees warmer than the coastal highs. In the summer it’s not uncommon to see 79 degrees at the coast and 100 degrees of dry heat at the Safari Park.

If you’re already planning on going to the San Diego Zoo in addition to the Safari Park, then look into the “Three-For-One” Pass. This multi-use pass gives you admission into the San Diego Zoo, The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and SeaWorld.

The best part about the Safari Park is that you get to choose how you experience the animals! The easiest way to enjoy the park is the Africa Tram Safari, a 25 minute tram ride that takes you through the African Plains portion of the park. This is an awesome chance to see some of your favorite African animals up-close and personal. Be on the lookout for giraffes, rhinos, gazelles, and antelope. While the Africa Tram Safari is included in the price of admission, most of the other safaris cost extra. Check out the Safari Page for more information and pricing details.

Once you visit the expansive San Diego Zoo Safari Park, you will never be able to look at a traditional zoo the same way again. Seeing animals up-close in the natural habitats is an awesome experience that will leave you and your kids in amazement. Start planning your trip to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park now and get ready for your own adventure in the animal kingdom!

Excitement is buzzing in the air again for walkers, joggers and runners at the prospect of participating in Safari Zoo Run 2010, a run to mark the death anniversary of Singapore’s most beloved Sumatran orang-utan, Ah Meng!

Singapore Zoo and Night Safari are located on 68 hectares of lush greenery overlooking the Upper Seletar Reservoir, and participants will be soaking in the beauty of nature during their jogs.

The Safari Zoo Run was last Saturday and boy, was it a bummer. Not only did I not get to run – my race category got cancelled because of a Category 1 downpour – the event itself was so poorly organised, it left me wondering whether my hefty race fee of $50 was used to buy monkey snacks instead of logistics.

The first warning sign that this would not be a good event was the fact that promotional direct mailers were signed off by “Ah Meng”. Last I checked, the animal afterlife doesn’t come with Internet access. Then, the race information booklet was riddled with spelling and grammar errors. To wit: “Please queue in orderly manner to collect your Finisher’s medals.” Remember this; it’s important.

The next major boo-boo took place when the first runners started sprinting in. A handful of event people stood with wands at the ready to scan the runners’ timing chips. This was all well and good when there were only a couple of runners coming in, but when the masses began crossing the finish line, things began to go wrong. The scanners couldn’t scan the chips fast enough, and sometimes scanned a runner who had come in earlier, after they scanned a later runner. I’m 100 per cent certain that none of the timings of the kids in the race are accurate. If you look at the photo above, you’ll see that the overall champion for the kids race crossed the finish line at 12:41.

Alison was fine and dandy, and very happy to have added a new medal to her small but growing collection. The weather, however, was not so fine – it began to drizzle just before Alison came in, and progressed to an all-out thunderstorm shortly after. Thousands of runners sought shelter from the rain in the holding area, under the podium tent, along the walkway between the zoo and Night Safari, and under tiny 100Plus sponsored umbrellas that could fit about a dozen people each. The emcee made periodic updates on the weather, but all of us could tell that we were not going anywhere.
