Text messages have been circulating recently about Pepsi and HIV. The text message reads something like this:
Please do not drink any pepsi soda, a worker from the company has put blood contaminated with aids inside the bottles. Please forward.
Upon investigation by The Inside Scoop we have determined that the text message is urban legend but FALSE. The story is believed to have originated in July 2011 and is closely akin to another rumor.
For educational purposes, be mindful that HIV is a virus and it is highly improbable that it could live very long outside of a human body. The Centers for Disease Control has emphatically stated that people cannot acquire HIV through restaurant food. They have said:
HIV does not live long outside the body. Even if small amounts of HIV-infected blood or semen was consumed, exposure to air, heat from cooking, and stomach acid would destroy the virus. Therefore, there is no risk of contracting HIV from eating food. (Emphasis ours).
According to a series of breathless warnings that are currently flooding social media websites and are also circulating via email and text message, a worker at Pepsi has been deliberately contaminating bottles of the popular beverage with his own HIV infected blood.
However, there is not even a shred of truth to this silly story. If true, such a story would have been extensively reported by news outlets all around the world. And, of course, any potentially contaminated batches of Pepsi would have now been recalled. However, there are no credible news reports whatsoever that confirm the claims in the warning. Nor are there any recalls of Pepsi products due to potential HIV blood contamination.
Moreover, the US based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that it has never received any reports of HIV infections caused by contaminated food. The CDC also points out that a person would not become infected even if they did consume food that contained HIV infected blood.
Shareholders of PepsiCo have filed a resolution with the Securities and Exchange Commission in an effort to force the company to stop contracting with a research firm that uses cells from aborted babies in its process of producing artificial flavor enhancers. According to LifeNews.com, Pepsi has “ignored concerns and criticism from dozens of pro-life groups and tens of thousands of pro-life people who voiced their opposition to PepsiCo contracting with biotech company Senomyx even after it was found to be testing their food additives using fetal cells from abortions.”
When asked about her company’s use of HEK293, Senomyx vice president Gwen Rosenberg assured a reporter for the Miami New Times that “you won’t find anything on our website about HEK293.” Queried about the company’s position on stem-cell research, Rosenberg boasted, “We don’t have a position on anything. We’re dedicated to finding new flavors to reduce sugars and reduce salt. Our focus is to help consumers with diabetes or high blood pressure have a better quality of life.”
