Singapore Turf Club

Singapore Turf Club:Includes historical milestones, racecourses, facilities, sponsorships, highlights, and events.

The Singapore-based Brazilian jockey Joao Moreira has been confirmed for a Sydney cameo in between Kranji meetings during the next 48 hours.

Moreira will ride in Singapore on Friday night before catching a midnight flight to take four stakes mounts for Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm operation at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

He will then return to Singapore on Sunday morning, in time for the important ride on the unbeaten Super Easy in a Group Three race at Kranji.

"I've done it before and I should be able to be fresh and get back on top of things here on Sunday, especially for the ride on Super Easy in the Three Rings Trophy," Moreira told the Singapore Turf Club website.

Moreira, who has swept all before him since arriving in Singapore in 2009, has emerged as a go-to carnival jockey for Tinkler and trainer John Thompson.

At his initial Sydney visit during last year's spring carnival he coaxed the enigmatic entire Trusting to his first win in two years with a Group Two Chelmsford Stakes victory.

More success on Trusting followed in the Hill Stakes and Moreira was in the saddle when Hussousa landed the Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick on Epsom Handicap day.

Market assessors have pinpointed Hussousa as easily the best of Moreira's four rides.

The filly is prominent in Golden Slipper betting and resumes as a clear-cut second favourite behind Magic Millions winner Driefontein in the $100,000 Widden Stakes (1100m).

"She is a very good filly," Moreira said. "When I won on her she showed great speed and ran on very strongly."

Driefontein ($1.80) and Hussousa ($2.70) are expected to provide the Widden quinella.

Moreira will link with Isopach again as the three-year-old takes his first step towards the Australian Derby in the Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m).

"I rode Isopach in the (Victoria) Derby and I remember he was caught wide but still ran on well for fifth," Moreira said.

The 28-year-old has also been booked for Kneeling in the Light Fingers Stakes, the Group Two race for three-year-old fillies in which Patinack will also run Pane In The Glass.

As a Group One placegetter in the Champagne Stakes, Pane In The Glass commands a higher profile than her stablemate.

But a recent trial win has the Patinack team confident about Kneeling's prospects in the Light Fingers and beyond.

"Her trial was super and she could be a real smoky," Patinack's racing manager Robyn Hartney said.

Moreira will also partner staying mare Galizani in her autumn pipe-opener in the Group Two Breeders Classic.

The Singapore Turf Club was founded in 1842 as the Singapore Sporting Club to operate the

Serangoon Road Race Course at Farrer Park. It is today the only horse-racing club in Singapore

and is part of the Malayan Racing Association, which also regulates the three Turf Clubs in

Malaysia, the Selangor Turf Club, Penang Turf Club and Perak Turf Club The Singapore Turf

Club is the only authorised operator of horse racing, and totalisator (horse betting) services in

Singapore. It is the agent and proprietary club of the Tote Board, Singapore, who manages and

directs its donation of surplus funds for charitable purposes. The first race was held on 23

February 1843 when prizemoney on offer was only $150. In 1924, the Club changed its name to

the Singapore Turf Club. This was done to reflect its role as a horse racing club more accurately.

The Club moved to Bukit Timah in 1933 before relocating to its present location at the Singapore

Racecourse at Kranji in 1999. The racecourse is adjacent to Kranji MRT Station. Racing is staged

all-year round on either Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, or Wednesdays.

Channel News Asia

Channel NewsAsia:A muted response to the government's budget is expected on the Singapore stock market on Monday.

Analysts Channel NewsAsia spoke to expect a neutral to slightly negative reaction by investors.

Many of the key measures announced on Friday by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Tharman Shanmugaratnam were well within market expectations, including a move to cut to the proportion of foreign workers that Singapore companies can hire.

"In terms of market impact, the measures are not really something that came as a big surprise. They have already been flagged and companies are already prepared and well aware that foreign worker costs will go up," CIMB regional economist Song Seng Wun said.

Nonetheless, conditions will be tougher for some businesses.

Sectors most prone to negative sentiment are those affected by the tightening of foreign labour restrictions.

These include manufacturing, construction and services.

PwC Services tax partner David Sandison said further restricting foreign worker employment doesn't address the problems of a tight labour market.

"The proposed measures will simply make it more difficult for local businesses, which are starved of appropriately qualified human capital, to meet their resource needs," Mr Sandison said.

The government expects costs to rise for 500 manufacturers and for 850 services companies, as a result of lower dependency ratio ceilings (DRC).

The DRC is a maximum ratio of local to foreign workers, imposed by the government on employers.

Another budget measure that is likely to interest investors is the tax exemption for transactions involving the trade of investment-grade gold, which was broadly welcomed.

"Oil, FX and commodities have been major trading areas here. With the dynamism that we've seen in the gold market over the past few years, it is quite natural to work towards building physical gold trading here," said Kelvin Tay, UBS chief investment strategist for Singapore.

Robert Tsang, head of indirect tax services at Deloitte Southeast Asia, noted that precious metals trading had become a substantial business for Singapore.

"The GST exemption on investment-grade gold should simplify compliance and help cash flow," he said.

Elsewhere, analysts say hospitality and tourism-related stocks may receive some support from the government's additional S$905 million top-up of the Tourist Development Fund aimed at attracting higher-spending tourists.

Meanwhile, adjustments to the withholding tax exemption for vessel charter payments may be a boost for the offshore & marine services industry.

Singapore Information

Singapore Information:Singapore , officially the Republic of Singapore, is a Southeast Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator. An island country made up of 63 islands, it is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. Singapore is highly urbanised but almost half of the country is covered by greenery. More land is being created for development through land reclamation.

Singapore had been a part of various local empires since it was first inhabited in the second century AD. Modern Singapore was founded as a trading post of the East India Company by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 with permission from the Sultanate of Johor. The British obtained full sovereignty over the island in 1824 and Singapore became one of the British Straits Settlements in 1826. Singapore was occupied by the Japanese in World War II and reverted to British rule after the war. It became internally self-governing in 1959. Singapore united with other former British territories to form Malaysia in 1963 and became a fully independent state two years later after separation from Malaysia. Since then it has had a massive increase in wealth, and is one of the Four Asian Tigers. The economy depends heavily on the industry and service sectors. Singapore is a world leader in several areas: It is the world's fourth-leading financial centre, the world's second-biggest casino gambling market, and the world's third-largest oil refining centre. The port of Singapore is one of the five busiest ports in the world, most notable for being the busiest transshipment port in the world. The country is home to more US dollar millionaire households per capita than any other country. The World Bank notes Singapore as the easiest place in the world to do business. The country has the world's third highest per capita GDP (PPP) with US$59,936, making Singapore one of the world's wealthiest country.

Tharman Shanmugaratnam:

Tharman Shanmugaratnam:Tharman Shanmugaratnam (Tamil: தர்மன் சண்முகரத்தினம், simplified Chinese: 尚达曼; traditional Chinese: 尚達曼; pinyin: Shàng Dámàn; born 1957) is a politician from Singapore. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he is currently the country's Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Finance and Minister for Manpower. He previously served as the Minister for Education from 2003 to 2008.[1] He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2001.

In March 2011, Tharman was appointed the Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee, the policy steering committee of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He was also admitted to the Group of Thirty (an international consultative group made up of 30 leading financiers and academics) in June 2008.

Singapore said it will increase aid to its poorest citizens to defray rising living costs and make it harder for companies to hire foreign labor as the island seeks to reduce dependency on overseas workers.

The government will cut the proportion of foreign workers that companies can hire and may consider further increasing levies for employing them, Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said in his budget speech in Parliament today. It will partially reimburse businesses for older Singaporean workers on their payrolls, and low-income and elderly households will receive cash and utility rebates.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has signaled a shift toward addressing public discontent over rising prices and an influx of foreigners after his ruling party suffered its smallest electoral win since independence in 1965. Measures announced today to tighten the inflow of foreigners follow similar steps taken in the past two years which have increased the cost of hiring overseas workers at hotels, offices, factories and construction sites.

“We are making important moves to build a fair and inclusive society,” Shanmugaratnam said today. “We have to reduce our dependence on foreign labor, and do much more to build an economy driven by higher skills, innovation and productivity, as the basis for achieving higher incomes for Singaporeans.”

Revealed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Friday, this year's budget showed that Singapore's economy expanded by 4.9 percent in 2011. This figure was within the 4 percent to 6 percent range projected last year, he noted.

As for 2012, Tharman said Singapore's GDP (gross domestic product) growth was expected to be between 1 percent and 3 percent due to the global slowdown. He noted that the local manufacturing sector was already experiencing weaker demand, reflecting sluggishness in the developed market, although "prospects remain positive" for companies operating in Asia.

"Our economy will slow down this year, but we should look at this in perspective. We enjoyed an exceptional rebound in 2010... [and] growth in 2011 was healthy, too, at about 5 percent," said Tharman. "Against this backdrop, a slowdown to 1 percent 3 percent growth in 2012 is still consistent with our medium-term growth potential of 3 percent to 5 percent."

The Medisave top-ups of between S$150 and S$450 will go to older Singaporeans aged 65 and above. The older you are and the lesser the annual value of your home, the more you get. This would benefit 85% of all elderly Singaporeans.

The GST Voucher will also help lower- and middle-income households through permanent U-Save rebates, to offset part of their utilities bill. Households will get between S$180 and S$260, depending on their flat type.

Households living in smaller flats will benefit more. For instance, those in one- and 2-room flats will get $260 a year. This is equivalent to about three to four months of their utilities bills on average, said Mr Tharman.

To illustrate how the GST Voucher adds up, Mr Tharman gave an illustration:

"A retiree couple living in a three-room flat will receive enough to offset fully the GST they pay each year. They typically pay about S$840 in GST a year but will receive S$1,240 worth in their GST Voucher. Younger lower-income households (without an elderly person) in three- or four-room flats will also receive a significant GST offset. It should cover about half of the total GST they pay each year".

The cash and Medisave components of the GST Voucher will be available from August this year, while the U-Save rebates will be given out in January and July each year, starting this July.

Ernst & Young partner Chong Lee Siang said: "It's a very smart move, because when you have a temporary scheme, announce it for five years ahead, people forget that they've received this benefit.

"So the GST Voucher is a very good idea to remind people this is meant to offset the GST cost. And it's very targeted and it's there to stay."

The GST Voucher will cost the government about S$680 million this year.

Since this is a permanent feature of the tax system, a GST Voucher Fund will
be set up from which the payouts will be made.

S$3.6 billion will be set aside over the next five years for the GST Voucher.

Teck Whye Secondary School

Teck Whye Secondary School:Teck Whye Secondary School(Abbreviation: TWSS) is a government co-educational secondary school located in Choa Chu Kang, Singapore. TWSS was founded in 1965 at Teck Whye; it moved to its current building in 2002.
Teck Whye Secondary School is a neighbourhood school with the majority of the students from nearby housing estates. In the days before English was the main medium of instruction, it used to offer Chinese-medium and Malay-medium classes as well. The school itself was situated in Jalan Teck Whye for many of years, until it had been relocated to a new building in Teck Whye Crescent, 2002. Under the leadership of the last Principal, Mr Adrian Cordeiro, the school revamped its school crest, school uniform and school song. A new Principal, Mr Ong Hong Kong, took over at the end of 2009.

A national multi-agency body to align sports pathways in schools from primary to tertiary level, more curriculum time for Physical Education (PE) and greater parental involvement is on the cards, as part of the recommendations of Vision 2030.

A key recommendation, which has been welcomed by the Ministry of Education (MOE), is the setting up of a committee to "better coordinate the efforts of various stakeholders to strengthen and align sports pathways".

The proposed committee will comprise members from the MOE, the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, the Singapore Armed Forces, the People's Association, the National Trades Union Congress, tertiary institutions, the Singapore Sports School and the Singapore Sports Council.

With an initial focus on youth sports development, the proposed committee will coordinate measures to "encourage sports participation, capability development of sports professionals, integrated programme delivery, competition frameworks and facilities development".

It will also work to increase parental involvement in the school sports scene by, for instance, creating opportunities for families to participate together in programmes and events organised by the proposed Super Sports Clubs.

In schools, time devoted to PE will also be further increased, as part of the MOE's long-term plan. Through its PE and sports programme, the MOE will "systematically develop the values of sportsmanship and teamwork in students".

By the end of secondary school, every child should have learnt to play at least three core sports at the recreational level and have opportunities to continue participating in sports within the community.

The MOE began increasing the curriculum time for PE in 2010. At Teck Whye Secondary School, its students undergo an average of 75 minutes of PE lessons per week, compared with 60 minutes previously.

Teck Whye principal Zach Ong noted that striking a balance between PE, co-curricular activities and academic lessons is challenging for schools as well as students.

Welcoming the proposal to further increase the duration of PE lessons, Mr Ong noted the need for indoor sports facilities. Currently, the school's PE lessons are conducted before 10.30am when the weather is conducive for outdoor activities.

Ms Shirley Teo of Teck Whye Secondary School often feels that her students are the ones who taught her how to teach. She believes that a student’s learning process is affected by the mood of the teacher, and always makes an effort to come into class with a smile and lots of humour.

In line with this principle, she felt that reading should be perceived by students as fun, rather than a chore, and implemented the Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) programme, which led her and her team of teachers to being voted for the MOE Outstanding Contributions Award in 2008.

Singapore Airshow 2012

Singapore Airshow 2012:A record 31 billion U.S. dollars worth of deals have been announced at the Singapore Airshow this year, organizers said on Friday.

The number was "threefold of what we did two years ago" at the biennial event, Jimmy Lau, managing director of the organizer Experia Events, told a press briefing.

The number included a record 22.4 billion dollar order of 230 jets placed by Indonesia-based Lion Air. The total value of deals garnered by engine makers was significant too. Rolls-Royce said it won orders worth nearly 500 million U.S. dollars for Trent 700 engines and support services.

The Singapore Airshow kicked off on Tuesday and the trade days will run until Friday. It will be open to the public on the weekend.

Some 38,000 trade visitors from 119 countries and regions visited the show during the first three days, Lau said, adding that the total number of professional visitors is expected to be around 45,000 by the end of Friday.

About 30 percent of the visitors were from overseas.

Lau said that some 70 percent of the 900 exhibitors at the show have reaffirmed their plans to come back for the next show in 2014.

The organizer also announced that it will make China a feature country in 2014.

"Our aim now is to bring in the three or four provinces that are very active in aerospace business," he said.

The event attracted industry giants such as Airbus and Boeing as well as other aerospace players to showcase their products and services to customers in the Asia Pacific.

The business aviation market of the region is expected to continue to grow quickly and business jet manufacturers have mostly said that they would be coming back in 2014.

Nevertheless, Lau said that it is "not something you can do overnight" to grow the business aviation market as it requires the infrastructure and procedural changes to support its growth.

"There needs to be some deregulation for business jets around the region in places like China. I think once the deregulation comes into play, the market will grow," he said.
A record 31 billion U.S. dollars worth of deals have been announced at the Singapore Airshow this year, organizers said on Friday.

According to Jayne Stars, "Ip Man" starlet Lynn Hung, who is also Hong Kong superstar Aaron Kwok's girlfriend, is one of the stars to have gone for surgery before, in order to correct her eyes, nose, jaw, as well as her bust line for her modelling career in Nanjing.

Their lips locked, their tongues intertwined and he rested his hand on her chest.

This sounds like a scene from an adult film, but it is actually a scene from a recent concert produced by Hong Kong lyricist Wyman Wong, in which Hong Kong singer Eason Chan performed a steamy duet with Denise Ho.

Chan raised eyebrows when he kissed Ho passionately on the mouth and put his hand on her chest, during their performance of the Cantopop classic "Legendary Beauty and Talent", a song made famous by late greats Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung.

This happened in full view of Chan's wife Hilary Tsui and his daughter Constance Chan, who were both in the audience.

The Hong Kong media was all over the incident, but Chan appeared relatively nonchalant when he spoke with the press about his rather graphic scene with Ho after the concert.

Although Ho claimed she "lost out", and that Chan had planned the whole thing to outdo Mui and Cheung, Chan said Ho was the one who made the first move.

"I didn't stick my tongue out, she did it first … and I didn't fondle her chest, I just lightly touched it," said Chan, adding that he was not too concerned about his daughter see him behave in that way.

"My daughter got frightened and asked 'Why is Auntie Ho (Denise Ho) behaving like that with Daddy?'

"Just take it as letting her (Chan's daughter) mature earlier, it's nothing," Chan told reporters, during a party after the show.

Chan's wife was photographed looking shocked when she witnessed Chan and Ho's performance during the concert, but she too has since brushed off the incident.

Tsui posted a photo of Chan's attention-grabbing kiss on her micro blog on Thursday and described the scene as "great".
