Dr Cherian George is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies. His full-time position is at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, where he heads the journalism division. He is also a Research Associate of the Asia Research Centre at Murdoch University, Australia.
He is an Associate Professor at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, in the Division of Journalism and Publishing.
Prior to taking up his appointment at Nanyang Technological University, Dr George was a post-doctoral Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. He has a PhD in Communication from Stanford University, where he wrote his dissertation on internet-based alternative journalism in Singapore and Malaysia. He is also a graduate of the Journalism School at Columbia University, and of Cambridge University, where he read social and political sciences.
Before moving to academia, he spent 10 years at The Straits Times, where he wrote mainly on domestic politics and media issues. Dr George remains active in professional journalism, as the editor and publisher of What's Up, an independent monthly current affairs newspaper for schools.
St. George Malankara Orthodox Church is building a new worship facility in Meiers Corners to replace its current church in New Dorp Beach. It will serve the spiritual needs of about 100 families of Indian heritage who live in New York and New Jersey.
Shovels tore into the damp earth on the snowy afternoon of Jan 21, breaking ground for the new church at 28 Sunset Ave., and raising hope for the vitality of the faith in Staten Island, said parish secretary John Cherian.
Designed by Diffendale and Kubec of Port Richmond, the new facility will be built by Signature Constructions of Mill Neck, NY. Construction will begin this month and is expected to be completed in April 2013.
Diocesan Bishop H.G. Zachariah Mar Nicholovos blessed the site, led by the vicar, the Rev. Alex K Joy. About 200 people attended the ground-breaking ceremony, including former church vicars, parishioners, friends, neighbors and community members.
