St. George Malankara Orthodox Church is building a new worship facility in Meiers Corners to replace its current church in New Dorp Beach. It will serve the spiritual needs of about 100 families of Indian heritage who live in New York and New Jersey.

Shovels tore into the damp earth on the snowy afternoon of Jan 21, breaking ground for the new church at 28 Sunset Ave., and raising hope for the vitality of the faith in Staten Island, said parish secretary John Cherian.

Designed by Diffendale and Kubec of Port Richmond, the new facility will be built by Signature Constructions of Mill Neck, NY. Construction will begin this month and is expected to be completed in April 2013.

Diocesan Bishop H.G. Zachariah Mar Nicholovos blessed the site, led by the vicar, the Rev. Alex K Joy. About 200 people attended the ground-breaking ceremony, including former church vicars, parishioners, friends, neighbors and community members.
