Many of you would be familiar with HardwareZone, a popular tech media company that was bought by Singapore Press Holdings for S$7.1 million (US$5.8 million) in 2006.

As employees of SPH, they started work on SEO company ClickTrue — a HardwareZone subsidiary — which was later folded into Kyosei Ventures, effectively setting the founders free again to do their own investments, according to entrepreneurship blog e27. They interviewed Kyosei’s executive chairman Jackie Lee, who is one of the five co-founders of HardwareZone.

Kyosei is looking for early startups in the interactive digital media space in the Southeast Asia region. They are looking to fund companies anywhere between S$50,000 to S$300,ooo (US$41,000 to US$246,000), or seed stage, Series A and B.

Tenants would have to pay a fee of S$180 per desk per month (see earlier story), and not all applicants are picked. The co-working space commenced operations on 14th August, 2011.

The other investor-in-residence confirmed so far is East Ventures, a Singapore and Indonesia based venture capital firm.

HardwareZone is an IT-oriented Internet portal based in Singapore. It is operated by Hardware Zone Private Limited, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH). Some features of the portal are: IT price lists for several countries, product reviews, feature articles on technology and forums on a variety of topics.

HardwareZone was started as an online magazine in August 1998 by five engineering students from the National University of Singapore: Lee Choon Yau, Eugene Low, Poh Swee Hong, Ang Chi Hoe and Jereme Wong.[1] After a year, it had become a popular gathering place for Singapore's computer-savvy to discuss hardware and software news.

The success of HardwareZone has also come with a fair share of controversy. In September 2000, HardwareZone sued Video-Pro, a computer shop in Sim Lim Square, for registering the same domain name as its own, with the suffix .sg added. (HardwareZone's domain name is www.hardwarezone.com while Video-Pro had registered www.hardwarezone.com.sg.) In its statement of claim, HardwareZone said that the "hardwarezone" part of its domain name had gained it substantial goodwill in Singapore, and thus Video-Pro was trying to pass itself off as the original website by using the .sg version of the name. Video-Pro counter-sued HardwareZone, alleging that the website offered Video-Pro's price lists for download without the shop's permission and that two statements which defamed the shop had been posted on the HardwareZone website. This was the first legal dispute in Singapore over a domain name. Despite being the first of its kind, no landmark ruling was made in this case because both parties settled the matter out of court just four days later. Video-Pro transferred the hardwarezone.com.sg domain name and paid S$10,000 to HardwareZone. It also withdrew its counter-claims. In return HardwareZone removed the offending statements from its website and agreed to help identify who had made those false statements.

HardwareZone has published their review of the Panasonic G3 and its features include a new 16 megapixel sensor with new technology designed to reduce noise, same processing engine as the GF2, pop-up flash, hot shoe, ISO 160-6400, 25% smaller than the G2, electronic viewfinder, touch screen LCD allowing touch screen enabled background defocusing, touch screen exposure control compensation, touch screen AF and touch screen white balance, four frames per second burst at full resolution, 3 inch articulating LCD, 100% field of view LCD, 23 area auto focus points, stereo microphone, and 1080p HD video.
